Beekeepers in Ontario face significant challenges managing Varroa destructor mites, as these pests have increasingly developed resistance to synthetic acaricides over the last three decades. To address the limitations of existing field tests, researchers developed a glass vial residual bioassay designed to provide a more precise and efficient measurement of chemical efficacy. The study specifically evaluated the performance of amitraz, flumethrin, and tau-fluvalinate, finding that amitraz was the most effective at lower concentrations. By establishing lethal and discriminating concentrations for these chemicals, the bioassay offers a laboratory-based protocol for monitoring resistance levels. These findings are intended to help beekeepers implement better Integrated Pest Management strategies through informed chemical rotation. Ultimately, consistent surveillance of mite populations is essential for reducing overwinter colony mortality and ensuring the long-term health of honey bees. #honeybees #valleybeekeeping
