The Ontario Beekeeping Association’s Tech-Transfer Program initiated several multi-year research projects in 2018 aimed at enhancing honey bee sustainability and Varroa mite management. One primary initiative involves testing new mid-season chemical treatments, such as oxalic and formic acids, to ensure they are safe and effective for use during the honey flow. Another major effort focuses on genetic selection, specifically breeding bees that exhibit grooming behaviors to naturally reduce mite populations without heavy reliance on miticides. Additionally, researchers are collaborating with institutions to introduce Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH) traits into Ontario’s local bee populations through isolated mating yards. Collectively, these efforts represent a comprehensive integrated pest management strategy designed to improve colony health through both innovative treatments and superior breeding practices.
