
This research article investigates why wild honey bee populations can survive Varroa destructor mite infestations without human intervention while managed colonies typically perish. Researchers conducted a two-year study comparing bees in small hives that swarmed naturally to those in large hives managed with standard beekeeping techniques. The results demonstrate that small nest cavities encourage more frequent swarming, which creates vital breaks in the parasite’s reproductive cycle. Consequently, the smaller colonies exhibited significantly lower mite levels, fewer instances of deformed wing virus, and much higher survival rates. These findings suggest that the environmental conditions of the wild, rather than just genetic evolution, play a crucial role in colony persistence. The authors conclude that beekeepers might improve colony health by simulating these natural processes, such as through colony splitting.
