Ontario's 2018 Bee Crisis

In 2018, Ontario beekeepers faced a catastrophic crisis as overwinter hive losses reached unprecedented levels, threatening the future of the local industry. A survey conducted by the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association revealed that nearly one-third of participants lost the vast majority of their colonies due to a combination of extreme weather and environmental stressors. The report identifies a prolonged, freezing winter and excessive dampness from the previous year as primary natural contributors to the decline. Furthermore, many commercial apiarists believe pesticide exposure, specifically from neonicotinoids, weakened their bees and made them more vulnerable to disease. Because traditional insurance and government programs are insufficient, the association is currently advocating for emergency financial relief to prevent beekeeping businesses from collapsing. These findings underscore a dire need for stricter pesticide regulations and better support systems to protect these essential pollinators. #honeybees #valleybeekeeping
